Beware! the Future is Promising: The Dynamics of Privacy Debates

Campaigning and capacity building on privacy is not easy. Often you

are left standing on your own as you defend against the sometimes near-

indefensible, e.g. campaigning against DNA databases and anti-

terrorism programmes. Other times, you have to stand on principle

even as you are mired in details, e.g. legalities of communications

surveillance or internet advertising. The most difficult scenario,

however, is when everyone agrees with you. The privacy debates are

facing difficult times ahead as we all struggle to disagree on

technological measures, social attitudes, and competing values,

amongst others. Can more be accomplished through conflict rather than

alliances?
